GO CARIB CREW!!! ALLYUH LAAAAAARGE!
Trini designs Miami mas Designs by Rhonda Berment for Miami Carnival 2004. It’s said that the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree so when veteran musician Robert Patrick Spicer fathered Rhonda Berment many thought she’d follow him in the field of music. But, though not going down the same path as her father, freelance trombonist with Roy Cape All Stars, Rhonda is still involved in the arts, but as a carnival designer. Berment was influenced by renowned mas designer Richard Bartholomew, who she played mas with for many years as a child. Now, she is trying to bring that delicate but effective quality of mas to Miami Carnival. Rhonda became part of the Miami Carnival in 2001, where she brought her first “special section” in the Miami-based band, China Mas Group. She worked with China, making two individual costumes in 2002, one grabbing third prize in the Queen competition of Kiddies Carnival. She left China Mas Group after Miami Carnival 2003, and decided to focus on bringing a children’s band for Miami Carnival 2004. This year, Rhonda’s designed are being produced under the banner of the Carib Crew Mas Group of Miami which is portraying Under the Big Top, a tribute to life in the circus. This is Rhonda’s first attempt at this level of kiddies mas and hopes that it will be a successful venture for both the band and herself. Rhonda is also making an individual costume for the Kiddies Carnival called Spirit of the Big Top, which will compete in the Kiddies Individual competition. Berment is now 33-years-old and attended Holy Name Convent before leaving for the US in 1988. She returned to Trinidad and attended the University of the West Indies and now resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
